Self Defence Training for City Council Employees
Gold Coast Daito-ryu Instructor Grant Periott will be providing Gold Coast City Council staff with safe, self defence training based on the martial art of Jujutsu. All Gold Coast City Council Social Club members are eligible to attend. These sessions are intended to be suitable for adults of all ages and of average fitness levels. Training sessions will run for 1.5hrs.
Jujutsu utilises a wide range of skills from simple movements to advanced tactics. The physical skills of Jujutsu include; evasion, redirection, joint locks, immobilisations, strikes, kicks, throws, projections and break fall techniques. There will not be a ground grappling/wrestling focus (such as in Brazilian Jujitsu and Judo) as the objective of this style of self defence is to “get away” not go to ground.
Beginner practice sessions will be centred around managing aggression and physical confrontation. A written curriculum will be provided to participants who wish to continue learning beyond the first session. Some of the core skills for beginners will include:
- Awareness – Threat Assessment
- Basic Body Movement (Taisabaki)
- Key Elements of a Physical Assault
- Common Attacks – Easy Counters
- Anatomical Weak Points (Kyusho)
- Scenario Practice
There will be time available to field situations of interest that participants may wish to explore.
Participants should wear old clothes, preferably T-shirts and loose fitting long pants (light track suit pants are fine) and no foot wear. Sessions will be held on Thursdays from 5:15pm QLD time in Training room 2 (Basement) of the Surfers Paradise Administration Building.
